Master of Management in Energy Curriculum

MME Curriculum Program Overview

At Tulane, our Master of Management in Energy (MME) combines finance and trading expertise with coursework that will equip you to work in the energy industry.

Designed by industry professionals and expert faculty members, our MME program integrates trending energy topics into your studies—whether it’s using state-of-the-art applications, leading-edge databases, simulations and course-based projects and much more. 

You have two options for how to pursue a Master of Management in Energy:

  • A 10-month program that can be completed in three semesters.
  •  A 17-month program that can be completed in four semesters.

No matter which option you choose, you’ll take 21 hours of required coursework in:

  • Advanced Career Development and Management
  • Energy and Environmental Economics
  • Energy Data Analysis
  • Energy Fundamentals and Trading
  • Energy Industry Projects
  • Energy Risk Management
  • Financial Reporting
  • Introduction to Energy Markets and Policy

 From there, you’ll take 15 hours of electives and have an option to pursue a specialization—or take whatever courses interest you.  

MME DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

Shared Courses Policy: Students pursuing multiple Tulane degrees with overlapping course requirements can double count up to 25% of the smaller degree's credit hours (max 9 credits). Students should consult the Office of Graduate Admissions to discuss their particular circumstances.

Master of Management in Energy Specializations

After your first semester, you can tailor your Master of Management in Energy to your interests by pursuing any of our six specializations. We offer specializations in:

  • Energy Trading and Risk Management
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Renewable and Sustainable Energy

Analytics

Today’s business environment requires experts who can use data to support decision making, and at Tulane, you’ll master the skills required to operate in this data-intensive world.

When you specialize in analytics, you’ll get the tools you need to transform large data sets into actionable knowledge—allowing you to make an impact in the energy industry. You’ll dive deep as you take courses in:

  • Modeling and Analytics
  • Advanced Spreadsheeting Modeling
  • Econometrics and Forecasting or SQL Database Fundamentals/Business Intelligence

With an MME specializing in analytics, you’ll be fully prepared for a career in the energy industry as a product developer, pricing analyst, entrepreneur or consultant. 

Banking & Finance

Prepare to work in the exciting, fast-paced world of finance with a Master of Management in Energy specialization in banking and finance.

Because the energy industry is capital intensive, a banking and finance specialization will open the door to opportunities in traditional lending, energy investment banking, venture capital, private equity and both the buy-side and sell-side.

You can participate in Burkenroad Reports—the nation’s first university-sponsored securities analysis program—as you take specialized courses in:

  • Energy Modeling
  • Energy Investment Banking, Venture Capital and Private Equity or Burkenroad Reports for Financial Analysts (take two of three)

Electric Power

Gain the tools and techniques to work in the broad spectrum of power generation—from renewables and energy transition to de-carbonization and beyond.

At Tulane, our Master of Management in Energy specialization in electric power takes a deep dive into the electric power market and power sector as you learn how the demand for renewables is changing the way the industry operates. Learn how to manage physical and financial power portfolios, applying concepts from operations management, economics and risk management.

You’ll take coursework in:

  • Renewables and Electric Power Markets
  • Energy Trading: Wholesale Electric Markets
  • Econometrics and Forecasting

You’ll be equipped the skills and expertise to thrive in an ever-changing energy industry.

Energy Trading & Risk Management

Gain the skills to work in upstream, midstream, downstream and the electric power market.

Our Master of Management in Energy—with a specialization in energy trading and risk management—uses in-class simulations and experiential learning to equip you with the knowledge and know-how to maintain an efficient electric power market or oil and gas operation.

At Tulane, you’ll take specialized coursework in:

  • Algorithmic Trading and Quantitative Strategies
  • Energy Trading: Wholesale Electric Markets
  • Risk Management and Applications for Energy Firms, Risk Management and Applications to Financial Firms or Econometrics and Forecasting

You’ll have the expertise to stand out in a highly competitive job market and help address major challenges facing the energy industry. 

Entrepreneurship

New Orleans is a major entrepreneurial hub—providing a rich location for exploring new and emerging ideas.

At Tulane, our MME—with a specialization in entrepreneurship—focuses on venture capital and private equity, new venture planning and management of technology. You’ll acquire practical and applicable knowledge through courses such as:

  • Venture Capital and Private Equity
  • New Venture Planning, Innovation and Technology Commercialization, Management of Technology and Innovation or Research and Analytics (choose two)

You’ll also gain added expertise as you interact with the Albert Lepage Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, which can help you validate and launch your own energy start-up.

Renewable and Sustainable Energy

Solar and wind are two of the top three fastest-growing sectors in the energy industry.

Our specialization in renewable and sustainable energy provides essential knowledge of energy systems, renewable fuels and technology, energy transitions and behavioral and institutional barriers to achieving sustainable energy. You’ll take coursework in:

  • Renewables and Electric Power Markets
  • Renewable Energy Project Development and Finance
  • Climate Change ESG and Financial Markets

You’ll be prepared to make an impact in this ever-growing field—both here in Louisiana and beyond.
