MD/MBA Curriculum

The Freeman School offers two options for Tulane University medical students to earn both and MD and an MBA concurrently.  Freeman's four-year double degree program is one of the only programs in the country that offers both degrees in just four years. Students also have the option to spread coursework over 5 years. In addition, some students complete Freeman's accelerated, three-semester MBA program, by taking a year off during medical school or after medical school and prior to their residency.

For more information or to request a sample schedule for any of our programs, please contact admissions at abfadmit@tulane.edu. Please visit the Tulane School of Medicine page for more information on the MD curriculum.

Four-Year Double MD/MBA

For Tulane University School of Medicine students, Freeman offers one of the only programs in the country that allows students to complete both an MD and an MBA in only four years. The program requires 48 hours of courses from Freeman's MBA curriculum, which includes 39 hours of required courses and 9 hours of electives. Business core courses are taken in the summers (June-July) before and after the first year of medical school, with additional core courses and electives completed concurrently with the medical school curriculum during the first and fourth years.

Five-Year Double MD/MBA

For Tulane University School of Medicine students, we offer an accelerated 5-year MD/MBA program.  The program requires 47 hours of courses from Freeman's MBA curriculum. The fourth year is dedicated to Freeman's MBA courses, while students spend the fall of the fifth year in the medical school and the spring of the fifth year in the business school. One-Year MBA (Sequential)

Medical students may complete the MBA independent of their medical curriculum by enrolling in Freeman's full-time, accelerated one-year MBA program. Some MD candidates pursue their MBA by taking a year off either during medical school or between medical school and residency. The second option gives students the flexibility to complete MBA coursework while simultaneously securing residency. In all cases, students often report that an MBA gave them an advantage in securing admission to a competitive residency program.

The one-year MBA is a 54-credit hour degree program, but medical students may waive 6 credit hours based on their previous academic experience. The program starts in June with an intensive summer semester followed by traditional fall and spring semesters. Coursework can be customized with electives that support your specific career interests.
