Study Abroad & Exchange staff members are available for student advising appointments in order to assist students through the process of requesting placement at the right programs for each student. Factors that students should weigh include academics, personal goals, professional goals, language(s) of instruction, level of immersion, host university environment and support services, rankings and academic rigor, safety and security, housing preferences, financial considerations, academic calendars and program reviews.
Freeman students can make appointments and find information on eligibility, deadline dates, program dates and more online via the secure FreemanAbroad portal. To search our list of programs on the portal, navigate to Program Search to filter through programs by term, region, city, or language of instruction. Click on individual program brochures to learn more about each institution's unique attributes.
As you begin the process of researching available programs and setting up an initial advising appointment, a good place to start is to think about your goals for the semester, summer, or year abroad.
Here are some examples of questions to ask yourself as you map out goals to consider when searching for programs:
- Do I have specific academic interests or a cultural connection to a certain host country? Have specific coursework in mind? Our website allows students to search by area of study to find a list of programs that have historically offered relevant coursework within the field. Want to trace your family history and study abroad as a heritage student? Meet with a study abroad advisor to discuss which programs could fit your unique interests.
- What courses do I need to graduate? Which programs abroad offer the classes I need? Are there special courses offered at a partner school abroad that would complement my studies at Tulane? Review sample course offerings and partner schools’ course catalogs online.
- What are my professional goals? Would studying in a specific location benefit my degree? What are my future career goals and which university or location is the most suitable for helping me achieve these goals?
- What are the institutional criteria most important to me? We recommend that you consider various criteria for finding a good fit for what you are hoping to find in a study abroad experience. For example, what is the host institution's academic calendar? Or how about its academic offerings or institutional profile? Is ranking important to me? Is location important to me? What level of challenge do you feel prepared to take on?
- Do I want to improve any foreign language skills abroad? If so, you might consider looking at programs that offer either language courses or full language immersion. Most of Freeman’s international partners offer a variety of courses in English. Some have a larger selection of courses in English than others. Students also have the opportunity to study a second language abroad. If you are studying a second language, consider studying abroad in a country that offers classes in that language. Often, students have the option to take courses in a combination of English and the local language. Some programs have language pre-requisites. See the Language Prerequisite section on each program page.
- Are there any identity-based concerns that might influence my choice of a host country? If you are studying abroad as an LGBTQ+ student, a student of color, a first-gen student, a heritage student schedule an appointment with an advisor to learn how to research programs and navigate intersectional elements of identity abroad.
Freeman study abroad programs allow students to earn business elective credits while studying abroad. Students are encouraged to take classes that are different from what Freeman offers on campus and that are complementary to each student's degree plan. For this reason, students should view their Freeman Abroad semester as a prime opportunity to expand their academic repertoire and to learn in the business fields from international faculty.
Therefore, when reviewing program listings, students should search for institutions that offer classes that pique their academic interests. And while we encourage them to look for classes in their major, most Freeman Abroad students can also take electives in other business fields.
Also, the academic culture at each host institution can be very different from what Tulane students may be accustomed to. This can include things like attendance policies, class and exam formats, dress codes, power dynamics between professors and students, etc. Students should read up on the academic culture of the programs that you are reviewing to get a better sense of what to expect.
As you browse the individual program brochure pages, make sure to click on the "Academics" tab to read about the program's academic profile, offerings, academic culture, etc. Remember to click on the "Sample Courses" link to see Freeman Abroad's list of classes offered at each institution, how it transfers to Tulane, and if there are comments or feedback from prior students.
Most Tulane A.B. Freeman School of Business students study abroad with Freeman Study Abroad during their junior year. As you begin planning for study abroad you should consider your academic and professional goals as well as the variety of unique programs that we offer.
In addition to meeting with a Freeman Study Abroad Advisor, you should consult with your NTC and OUE Academic Advisors to discuss your graduation plans. In these meetings, you will learn about eligibility requirements, program details, the application process, course selection, and how your credits transfer back to Tulane.
Also consider the unique cultural landscape for the destinations you are interested in studying! Many Tulane students study abroad during their Junior Year Fall Semester, but host countries offer a great variety of cultural and outdoor activities during the Spring semester as well.
For eligibility requirements and application instructions, go to our general Semester Abroad brochure page and click on the "Eligibility and Application" tab.
Because the Freeman Abroad programs are all exchange programs, the housing offerings differ depending upon the host institution. We encourage students to consider whether the housing offered by their top choice programs is an important consideration when choosing a program. If it is, then students should request placement at the programs offering the type(s) of housing that are important to students.
For example, if you prefer to be able to book institutional housing, then you should be sure to request placement at a host institution that offers its own institutional housing. If you prefer to have independent housing, then be sure to request placement at a host institution that allows this option.
To find out more about each host institution's housing offerings, go to each program brochure page (after conducting your program search) and click on the "Housing" tab. There you can find the housing information for each of our partners.
Will cost of living in your host country impact where you decide to study? Review the Cost Sheets for each program by clicking on the "Costs" tab of each program brochure page.
