A major in Management provides you with skills and training that apply to all manners of business, preparing you to take on significant challenges and responsibilities in private, public and not-for-profit organizations. You’ll be ready to make strategic decisions, manage people and bring new technologies and innovations to market.

Earning a Management degree requires 18 hours of courses from an approved list of management classes. Sample classes that you can choose include:

  • Cases in Entrepreneurship features visiting CEOs and executives who join the professor to present case studies addressing real-world problems and opportunities. You’ll build on the analytical skills in accounting, business analysis, management and marketing from your business core courses.
  • Negotiations addresses the theoretical foundations and practical skills used in resolving differences and negotiating mutually satisfying outcomes. You’ll develop skills through simulated negotiations in a variety of contexts. Class topics include the nature of negotiations, different negotiating styles, distributive versus integrative bargaining, conflict and intercultural bargaining.
  • Management of Technology and Innovation examines how we analyze the processes that bring to market the products and technologies that are changing the ways we live and work. You’ll explore the forces that shape the evolution of technology, the roles of strategic alliances and intellectual property, and how to create product development teams.

Students with focused interests can select courses to concentrate in one of three optional areas to fulfill their 18-hour requirement.

  • Entrepreneurship. This area is appropriate for students interested in the basic tools of business discovery and validation as instruments for new venture formation and as a core capability for addressing challenges in innovative and competitive landscapes.
  • Human Resources and Consulting. This area is appropriate for students interested in learning essential tools for managing human resources and developing skills for engaging with clients in a consulting relationship.
  • Strategy and Consulting. This area is appropriate for students interested in understanding how firms make decisions related to achieving a competitive advantage in an existing business, diversifying into a new business, and managing their technology and innovation portfolio.

In addition to elective requirements within your major, you will also complete 12 hours of general business electives. For these courses, you can choose from any area, as long as you are not also counting them toward your major requirements. With electives, you can explore topics outside your major that will apply to the career path you ultimately choose.
